Medical Excuse Policy

Student Health Services has a policy not to provide written excuses to explain a student's absenteeism from classes or poor performance on examinations. This policy decision was made because of a desire to maintain confidentiality and to encourage more suitable use of health care resources.

It is the responsibility of the student to notify instructors about absences caused by illness or injury. If the student feels his/her situation deserves special consideration (such as an extended illness or injury that necessitates withdrawal from the university), or if the instructor will not accept the student's explanation, the student should make an appointment with a Student Health Services clinician, or contact the SHS Director to discuss other options.
