Local Case Prompts Recommendations for Meningitis Vaccine and Boosters

The Benton County Health Department reports one case of meningococcal meningitis in a Corvallis student. Although the ill person is not an OSU student, health providers are strongly encouraging those who have never had the meningitis vaccine to be vaccinated. Also, a booster dose is advised for those who have not been vaccinated within the past five years. The highest risk is for those aged 16-21, and especially those who are living in residence halls, fraternities or sororities.

The Corvallis student is at this time an isolated case. However, concern is valid following meningitis outbreaks at several universities in recent months.
