Stepping It Up Throughout the Day

Office Time

  • Walk to deliver messages instead of e-mailing coworkers
  • Use a countdown timer set for 30-45 minutes at your desk and when the buzzer goes off, take a brief walking break
  • Read your mail while pacing instead of sitting down

Television Time

  • Try to move during the commercial breaks (which are approximately 10-12 minutes in a half hour show and 20 minutes in an hour program)
  • Take a half hour walking break instead of watching a TV show
  • Change the channel manually rather than using the remote control

Car Time

  • Replace one car trip with walking each day, since over ¼ of all car trips are one mile or less
  • Park your car further away from where you are going
  • Walk to see your friends instead of driving

Social Time

  • Meet with friends for an activity like window-shopping or a museum visit instead of meeting to talk and eat together
  • Call up a friend to invite them for a walking session to chat

Phone Time

  • Try moving during your phone call, by pacing with a cordless headset or as far as your cord will reach
  • Get up after each phone call and move around the office

Delivery Time

  • Hand-deliver campus mail or letters
  • Take the long way to your destination
  • Use the stairs instead of taking the elevator

Home Time

  • Rake the leaves in your yard
  • Clean the house; mop or sweep the floors
  • Take your dog for a walk or offer to take a friends pet for a walk
