Stepping It Up Throughout the Day
- Walk to deliver messages instead of e-mailing coworkers
- Use a countdown timer set for 30-45 minutes at your desk and when the buzzer goes off, take a brief walking break
- Read your mail while pacing instead of sitting down
- Try to move during the commercial breaks (which are approximately 10-12 minutes in a half hour show and 20 minutes in an hour program)
- Take a half hour walking break instead of watching a TV show
- Change the channel manually rather than using the remote control
- Replace one car trip with walking each day, since over ¼ of all car trips are one mile or less
- Park your car further away from where you are going
- Walk to see your friends instead of driving
- Meet with friends for an activity like window-shopping or a museum visit instead of meeting to talk and eat together
- Call up a friend to invite them for a walking session to chat
- Try moving during your phone call, by pacing with a cordless headset or as far as your cord will reach
- Get up after each phone call and move around the office
- Hand-deliver campus mail or letters
- Take the long way to your destination
- Use the stairs instead of taking the elevator
- Rake the leaves in your yard
- Clean the house; mop or sweep the floors
- Take your dog for a walk or offer to take a friends pet for a walk
