Prednisone and alcohol
Question: will drinking 6 or 7 beers in the afternoon/night after having taken prednisone for two weeks be a problem? i started 2 weeks ago and took 60 mg every morning, last week i took 50, and this week i take 40. What would the affects of drinking in moderation be?
Answer: Alcohol intake while taking prednisone is not recommended. However, if you want to have a few beers while you are starting to taper off the prednisone, then it is best to space out the time between when you take the prednisone and consume the alcohol. Alcohol can interact with the prednisone to cause gastrointestinal tract problems, such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, etc. Since it is very important that your body absorbs the prednisone, you do not want to have gastrointestinal problems that may interfere with the absorption of the prednisone. So the best advice would be to take the prednisone in the morning and consume the alcohol in the early evening. If you still have questions, you should consult with a pharmacist.
