yogurt and yeast infections
Question: Is eating yogurt a good way to prevent a yeast infection?
Answer: Many health care providers suggest eating yogurt, which contains acidophilus, for the prevention of yeast infections. Acidophilus is a species of friendly bacteria that is an integral part of normal vaginal flora.
However, some doctors believe that a well-balanced diet low in fats, sugars, and refined foods is important for preventing yeast infections. In one preliminary trial, avoidance of sugar, dairy products, and artificial sweeteners resulted in a sharp reduction in the incidence and severity of yeast infections. Many doctors advise women who have a yeast infection (or are predisposed to such infections), to limit their intake of sugar, fruit juices, and refined carbohydrates. Many yogurts that are available in the supermarket are packed with sugar. If you're eating yogurt, in part, to help avoid yeast infections, pay particular attention to the sugar content! Avoid yogurts with more than 15 or 20 grams of sugar per serving. Probably the biggest culprits are going to be yogurts with fruit jam that you can mix in. Stick to plain yogurts, and chose your brand wisely!
