zithromax, diflucan - effect on bc pill
Question: 3 weeks ago I had been prescribed Zithromax along with Diflucan (for the imminent yeast infection due to antibiotics). Normally my fiance and I do not use condoms, but from the first day that I started the medication we began using them. Starting this past Saturday I began spotting, heavily at times. It's now Tuesday and I'm still experiencing brown/bloody discharge - I am on my second week of "active" pills. I have not missed a pill in the 6 years that I have been on them, and I am worried that a condom failed at some point and I could possibly be pregnant. I know the chances are probably slim and the bleeding may be due to the medication, but what do you think the odds are?
Answer: Diflucan does not interfere with contraceptive effectiveness. In a small percentage of patients, Zithromax will reduce contraceptive effectivness, with the result being ovulation. It's unlikely, however, it is possible. As long as you've not missed any pills, the chance that you are pregnant is only about 1% (probably less since you have been using condoms). If you are truly concerned, taking a home pregnancy test would probably ease your mind.
