Alcohol & Other Drugs: Testing and Metabolism

Due to the large volume of questions Spot receives about drug testing, it has be come necessary that we only answer questions if they differ substantively from the information provided below. Spot will only answer your question specifically if there is any element of it that cannot be answered by the information provided on this page.

Drug Testing for Marijuana

Unfortunately, there is no formula to compute how long it takes a person to rid their system of THC, the active and detectable ingredient in marijuana. There are only guidelines and even they are somewhat arbritrary. When Spot answers a specific question about how long it takes to be clean after a given amount of use, it's only an educated guess. You can make that guess just as easily as Spot can, using the guidelines below:

Your system is likely to be clear of THC after ten days if one or more of the following applies:

  • You use marijuana only occasionally (e.g., once a month or less)
  • You have been using marijuana for less than three months
  • When you use, you smoke an amount that would be approximately equivalent to one joint or less
  • The marijuana you use is of average potency or less

Your system is likely to be clear of THC after 20 days if:

  • You use marijuana a couple of times a month
  • You have been using marijuana for three to six months
  • When you use, you smoke an amount that would be approximately equivalent to one joint or less
  • The marijuana you use is of average potency or less

Your system is likely to be clear of THC after 30 days if one or more of the following applies:

  • You use marijuana about once a week
  • You have been using marijuana for six months to one year
  • When you use, you smoke an amount that would be approximately equivalent to one joint or more
  • The marijuana you use is of average potency or greater

Your system is likely to be clear of THC in 30 to 60 days if one or more of the following applies:

  • You use marijuana most days of the month
  • You have been using marijuana for more than one year
  • When you use, you smoke an amount that would be approximately equivalent to one or two joints
  • The marijuana you use is of average potency or greater

Your system is likely to be clear of THC in 60 to 90 days if one or more of the following applies:

  • You use marijuana daily
  • You have been using marijuana for more than one year
  • You smoke an amount that would be approximately equivalent to two joints or more per day
  • The marijuana you use is of average potency or greater

There is nothing you can do to hasten the metabolism of THC! Not drinking lots of water, no special teas or vitamin formulas.
